Story Reprint

The Queen’s Reason, originally published in Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet in 2010, has been reprinted in the current issue of Lightspeed Magazine. Check it out.

“The courtiers and servants did their best to conceal the truth, but that was a losing battle. The final straw, so to speak, was when their beautiful young queen managed to elude her Ladies in Waiting and greet the South Islands Confederation ambassador while wearing only a skirt made of broom straw and a gardenia pot for a hat. After that incident there was little point in denying the obvious: Mei Janda II, newly crowned Queen of Lucosa, was barking mad.”

I may be scarce for a few days. I’m back in Mississippi to help finish packing for the move, and then to transport the rest of our household back to Upstate. I’ll try to get back on something as close to an even keel as I ever manage once we’re settled. However long that takes.

Words have power. You can tell, because in the wake of the tragedies in Paris and Beirut and Baghdad, so many people are misusing them. Sad and angry as I might be at the moment, I want to think about that for a bit before I say anything.

We’ve been packing in anticipation of the move for about four months now, and storing a lot off site to stage the house for the realtors. But the date is set and now it’s time to clean out the storage locker and put everything in one place for the movers. In so doing I’ve come across several boxes marked only “MMB” in my handwriting. Totally blanked on what MMB was about until I stumbled across one box with the key included:

“Mostly My Books.”

Should have guessed.
