In the Realm of Legend

In the Realm of Legend

In the Realm of Legend

Which is the title of my retelling of the Perseus and Medusa myth. It would have been the last story I published in Realms of Fantasy, only they folded before that happened. I decided to put it out there myself, since we don’t have a magazine that fills that niche any more. So try to imagine what it would have been like to read it there, with something like the illustration I chose for it. Good times.

In the Realm of Legend

At the Turning of the Year

FairyGreenHairFall recedes and winter is approaching fast. There’s a beauty in winter, but there’s also cold and darkness and it’s not a time one needs to enter already thinking dark thoughts and holding on to guilt. So, alas for anyone reading this, I feel the need of some confession and apology. I apologize for that in advance.

I’m often every bit as self-centered as I appear to be, so for every time I’ve been too wrapped up in my own problems to notice someone else’s pain, I apologize. Whoever you are or were, you deserved better.

For every time I’ve failed to resist the urge to “mansplain” something just because I wanted to talk about a subject that interested me, I apologize. Conversation is not a monologue. It’s rude and worse, boring. I will break that habit.

I realized from my earliest years that being a guy gave me advantages over my sisters. While I wasn’t treated better, I was treated differently, and those differences gave me freedom of action and privileges that my sisters did not have. I was too much a part of it at the time to see it as a problem, but I do now. I apologize for being so slow.

Most of all, for every time I just did not listen, I am truly sorry.

2016, We Hardly Suspected

esc-skunkIs it just me or has 2016 kind of sucked? And I’m not even talking about the stale hell of the Election. That’s only part of it.

Oh, where to start. How about at the death of my main work computer? Yep. Everything was fine, and then it wasn’t. The usual. After working in PC support for over twenty years, I could recognize a dead PC when I saw one. Fortunately everything I absolutely need is on the flash drive in case the disk is unrecoverable. I’ll know more about that when I hook it up to the new machine, which I had to order since nothing I could find locally met my specs. When it comes to computers, I’m picky out of all proportion to my financial sensibilities.

I hope I’ll be able to use some of the parts from the old machine in the new one. My “old” video card is a tad more powerful than the new one, for instance. Assuming the ram chips survived, I may be able to upgrade the memory a bit. If the old disk proves readable, I’ll transfer what I want and then wipe it and use it as an external backup. Pretty sure the power supply and MB are fried. I thought about building a new PC from scratch, but in general you can buy an almost-but-not-quite system and tweak it for less money. Plus I don’t have that kind of time right now. I need a functional system ASAP. Things to do. As matters stand I’m typing this on my old Linux laptop. It’s underpowered to say the least, but  a lot better than nothing.

Enough wallowing in my own slough of despond. 2016 has sucked in much greater measure than my own petty inconvenience. I’m thinking of the losses, inside the field and out: David Bowie, Otis Clay, Prince, Gene Wilder, David Hartwell, Marvin Minsky, Bud Webster, Ed Gorman, Keith Emerson, Guy Clark, Muhammad Ali, Elie Wiesel, Kenny Baker, M.K. Wren, Glenn Yarbrough,… I could make a longer list but it’s depressing enough already.

And then…well, I won’t call it a revelation, exactly, but one consequence of the Election (aside from the Election itself) has been to emphasize that a substantial portion of my fellow citizens are fearful, proudly racist, homophobic, misogynist, and angry at all the wrong things. I mean, I knew that, but it’s quite another to have your face rubbed in it every living day. If there’s anything good to come out of that it has prompted some soul searching. I’ll have to think about that some more.

Meanwhile, 2016 goes on its merry way.  There are a couple months yet. You can’t fire a year, and even if you could, it’s a bad idea. Time is too precious, even “interesting” times, since it’s all we really have. I will say that 2017 needs to be a lot better, or we may have to revisit that whole “firing” thing.

Rainy Days and Mondays Redux

skelos1Right at this moment I’m beginning to wonder if this blog post is going to get written today, or if it is, posted. Suffering from a wonky internet connection. We—okay, I—have gotten so dependent on this ephemeral flow of electrons that I now find it hard, creation-wise, to function without them.

Case in point, the illustration to the left. That is Skelos #1, a new magazine of dark and weird fiction from Skelos Press. I ordered a copy when I first heard about it, and I admit this was mostly from nostalgia. See, when I was first entering the field, there were no online magazines like Lightspeed or Beneath Ceaseless Skies. In fact, there was no “online.” There were personal computers of various sorts, and something called a BBS, which was basically a bunch of users clinging to one central computer via analog modem. Yes, I am THAT old. Regardless, magazines like Skelos were almost the only game in town if you wanted to write and sell(?) fantasy fiction. Pro level magazines did pop up from time to time. Most didn’t last long. Pro magazines like Weird Tales or Fantasy & Science Fiction were the exceptions, not the rule. There were a lot more pure SF magazines around, but they wouldn’t touch a fantasy story with a ten-foot cattle prod. So it was the amateur and semi-pro magazines that filled the gap. Most were shoestring affairs, everything from perfect bound presentation pieces to saddle-stitched fanzine level crap, published only as long as the creator’s energy and money held out. Names like Copper Toadstool, Fantasy Macabre, Whispers, Weirdbook, Space & Time. Some of those names you may know, since Weirdbook and Space & Time have resurfaced in new incarnations. I would have included Weird Tales in that, but it has apparently died yet again. Continue reading →

Disposing of the Bodies–With Empathy

sheffield1One of the joys of living with cats is, every now and then, it will be your job to clean up a crime scene, dispose of (parts of, usually) a body, that sort of thing. They bring their prey home. That’s what cats do. Dogs are predators too, but only under the right circumstances. They’re mostly content to let us handle the food thing. Not cats. They are predators all the time. A well-fed, healthy cat is just a more efficient hunter, that’s all. You know all the time they’re purring in your lap or rubbing against your face they are still thinking “If I was as big as a leopard, I would totally eat you.” And they would.

So what has that got to do with the price of tea in Nepal? Continue reading →
